This week we here at SENTIENT would like to comment on this passing EARTHDAY, and explain how we are doing our part to be Green & ECO Friendly.
SENTIENT was formed in '07 and accidentally jumped on the GREEN wagon. From the beginning we went Local, partnering with San Francisco based Ashbury Images, a great screen
printing company that employs struggling youth and young adults while helping to build important life skills. We will be working with and supporting them again in the near future. To find out more about Ashbury Images,
Jerrick's Story
Jerrick is an 18 year old, San Francisco native, known for his almost constant smile. His mother passed away when he was a child and he has had little contact with his father. He was raised by his maternal grandparents. Though growing up in the poverty and gang violence of the city, Jerrick has chosen to stay positive and keep himself motivated by finding outlets like spoken word (a mix of poetic words, music, and hip hop) and the B-Boy movement (a form of break dancing).
Jerrick has also worked hard to take constructive steps in his life; though prior to Ashbury Images, he lacked the opportunity and guidance to pursue his goals. Before learning of Ashbury, Jerrick looked for a job to pay for his first semester at City College. But, with no prior job experience, he was overlooked by most employers. Upon hearing about Ashbury, Jerrick applied and was offered a six-month internship. Jerrick's supervisor noted his positive attitude and how dependable he was. In fact, during the entire course of his internship, he accomplished the unprecedented feat of not being late once for a work shift. And, for every paycheck he earned, Jerrick put one-half of the money in a savings account. Ashbury connected Jerrick with a community program that matched each dollar he deposited - doubling the amount he was able to save for his education!
During his internship, Jerrick also partnered with his case manager to reach his educational goals. Jerrick came to Ashbury hoping to complete his Associates Degree and then transfer to a four year university. But, he did not know how to make a transfer possible. His case manager sat down with him weekly and helped him with things like mapping out the sequence of classes required for a transfer and thinking through the how-tos of budgeting for school. His case manager also coached Jerrick on how to best balance and succeed in his job and at school. Like his internship, Jerrick consistently went to his classes. But, Jerrick did not consistently complete his assignments. His case manager held him accountable to the deadlines for his assignments, stressing the importance of fulfilling even the small commitments he had so that he could better tackle the bigger responsibilities of the future. Jerrick's case manager also matched him with a volunteer tutor for weekly one-on-one sessions to help him improve his written skills and get the good grades required for a transfer.
Ashbury Images "means a lot to me," Jerrick proudly says with a smile. "It is the only place willing to lend a hand to a youth who wants to make the right moves and stay away from negative influences." The Ashbury team recently celebrated Jerrick's graduation from his internship, right before the start of his next semester at City College. Jerrick describes Ashbury as a place that gives "chances" and teaches youth how to "get stuff done." "It gives you the chance in anything you want to do. They believe that you can pretty much do anything. And they'll help you in anyway they can."
